Understand Your Skin Type

The first thing to know about oily skin is that it does not just affect women. Although members of the female population spends considerably more time trying to perfect their complexions than the male segment, it is important for both men and women to comprehend the causes of oily skin so that they may take steps to reduce the effects.

Many people are born with oily skin, caused by overactive sebaceous glands. These glands produce sebum, which emerges from pores to coat the face in an unattractive, thick-looking, shiny substance. This can cause makeup to run or be difficult to apply in the first place. Especially in the area known as the “T zone,” which extends across the top of the brow line and down the nose to the chin, glands tend to produce large amounts of oil.

Of course, skin types do vary. Some people have strictly oily skin, but others may have combination skin, where it is oily in some places or normal to dry in others. While you may not notice much difference between oily and combination skin in appearances, it’s very important to know. The types of cleansers that may be appropriate for oily skin can actually strip too much oil from combination skin, causing it to produce even more in a vicious cycle.

If you’re not sure which skin type you have, talk to a doctor or dermatologist. You may need to adjust your routine for combination skin, or skin that is sensitive as well as oily. For the most part, however, the following steps will work to minimize oil in all skin types.

Try Natural Remedies

Home remedies sometimes get a bad rap, but there are actually quite a large number of treatments you can make at home using nothing more than the items in your refrigerator or cupboard. Learning how to get rid of oily skin often requires learning to rely on great home remedies. It’s cheaper, easier and often more effective than drugstore products. Best of all, because these remedies are natural and you wash them off soon after applying, they won’t clog pores or contribute to buildup that could in turn cause breakouts or irritation.

To tone skin and stop it from overproducing oil, you can try whipping an egg white until stiff and spreading it on your skin, with or without the addition of lemon juice. Without lemon juice, leave it on until it dries. If you add the lemon, take it off after 15 minutes to prevent skin from drying out too much.

Other toning formulas include plain yogurt, yogurt mixed with oatmeal, plain lemon juice or tomato juice. Rub the mixture or liquid over your entire face, leave for 10 or 15 minutes, and rinse off with tepid water. You can also try shredded apples patted onto your face, or a mixture of equal parts shredded apple, yogurt and lemon juice.
